ELUSIVE SAND

Today I cajoled poor old man Dylan into a river quest to get sand for my seed raising mix. Flooding around Grey River made it a little more of an adventure than my city slickers ways had expected and wet bums were enjoyed by all as we slipped over lichen covered rocks and through brambly, scratchy blackberries only to end up with little to show for our efforts. Despite a sound scolding from our gardening book we had to settle for finer, saltier sand where the river spilled oceanwards.

Gracie Dog enjoyed a seedling inspection, but she soon discovered there were much more interesting things to inspect. Meanwhile two naughty city dogs waited inside to be served, only to be disappointed, but not too disappointed.

SUMMER FRUIT – DECEMBER IN THE GARDEN

Sunflowers germinated in toilet rolls, Dylan made a hot compost, our first tomatoes have shown their shiny sheres and the beans are twining and flowering. The Chookheads as usual are up to no good and gobbling everything in sight. They have set a new record for demolishing an entire bed of Bok Choy in under an hour. They pay their way in delicious eggs though, never been late on a payment.

CACTI WITH CRUTCHES

These are the photos I took on Christmas Day, a very random assortment. I was busy finishing Dylan’s present in the corner of the garden with the chickens keeping me company. After the traditional Christmas Family Breakfast we went to the Botanic Gardens to celebrate my birthday. I hadn’t seen the “volcano” before and the little crutches for the cacti made me think of Dali. Dylan shed his shoes just in time to stand on sharp rocks.

EAT WHAT YOU SOW – NOVEMBER IN THE GARDEN

Cooked my first meal from our own eggs, they look and taste so much better than supermarket eggs. Yay happy chickens! Our spinach got out of control so I made a yummy spanakopita. and I pulled apart some more pallets to make a planter box for my parent’s christmas. Under the bricks the previous owner of the house laid concrete reinforced with any type of scrap metal he could find, old bikes, wire, anything! Dylan had the joy of spashing the concrete up so we could have a new bed. I had a cold so all I could do is watch ;).
